I need to perform a software update

A common task for network administrators is performing regular software updates on a server(s).  Fortunately, Elastic IPs make it easier than ever to perform regular code pushes without ever changing your DNS records.  Now you can simply switch the EIPs to the updated servers.

Recipe

Once you've fully tested the new servers and you can switch your Elastic IPs a couple different ways.

  1. Shutdown the new servers (FE-3 and FE-4).  Relaunch them and associate the EIPs at launch. See Assign the elastic IPs at launch.  
  2. If you prefer to keep the new servers (FE-3 and FE-4) running, see Transfer an Elastic IP to a running instance.
